From working out to eating out.

Yesterday, my friend Carrie and I ran to the track to burn some calories, work up a sweat, and chat.  (Because half of the fun of working out with a friend is catching up, right?)

Here’s what our workout looked like:

  • 5 minute warm up (ran from my house to the track)
  • 1 (4oo m)
  • 1 (800 m)
  • 1 (1 mile)
  • 1 (800 m)
  • 1 (400 m)
  • Cool down and stretch

The entire workout (from my doorstep and back to it) was about 50 minutes.

The minute we walked back in the house we bounded up the steps, got a drink of water and grabbed our keys to replinish the calories burned with an icecream treat at Jeremiah’s Ice.

Jeremiah’s Ice is one of Central Florida’s real gems.  Their gelatis (soft serve icecream and italian ice) cannot be beat.  A strawberry-lemon for me (plus) a red raspberry for Carrie (equals) sheer joy.

Does a small gelati from Jeremiah’s Ice cancel out a good 50 minute workout?  If so, don’t tell me!

The planner in me…

  • is already thinking about my weekend plans.
  • loves to plan dinner when I’m eating lunch.
  • makes my husband go dizzy over what’s happening next.
  • helps me stick to a consistent workout regime.

We all know life gets busy.  Between 40+ hours of work, spending time with my husband, errands, keeping up with friends and other misc tasks; working out gets put on the back burner of my agenda.  To help with this, I plan my workouts in advance.

  • I workout 3-5 times a week.  To do this, I take a quick glance at my schedule and see which days would best accommodate some sweating.  :)
  • I check with my running buddies to see which day(s) they’re available to run.
  • I see if there are any good classes available.  Free’s always nice!
  • I make a plan and try and stick to it.

And if all else fails I…

Trash Talk

I’m not usually a competitive person.  In junior high I ran cross country.  During one race I had been running next to a girl the whole time.  At the end of the race she had obviously had it:  her face was sweaty, her cheeks were red and she was huffing and puffing like a steam engine.  I decided that because she had worked so hard she deserved to come in before me.  So, I let her beat me to the finish.  Let’s just say I enjoyed the social aspect of the sport more than the actual sport itself. :)

This week, J and I signed up for a 5 mile race in Central Park, NYC.  We’ll be visiting this summer and I thought why not tour Central Park in less than an hour.  If you haven’t been to Central Park before, it’s a definite MUST SEE of the whole NYC experience!  Wouldn’t you say?

I would have to say J isn’t overly competitive either.  (Luck will be needed for our kids someday if they ever try out for a sport!)  That is until I threw out the challenge of using the 5 mile run as a race (that his wife will win) instead of a fun run.  We’re realizing how a little competitive edge can bring out the trash talk in the best of us.  I hope this is how I look crossing the finish line without him:  happy and victorious. :)

But just between you and I, I may let him beat me to the finish. We can all use a win sometimes.

When I’m a Grandma…

The other day we received a sweet Easter note from my Grandma Ellen. It’s funny because though we rarely talk on the phone, I can always count on a letter in the mail to let me know how much she and my Grandpa love J and I.

I love both of my grandmas and feel so thankful to have them in my life. Not only are they the most pleasant people to be around, they have terrific memories, are great listeners and are fantastic cooks. It made me wonder, “What will I be like as a grandmother?” Will I wear sweaters that coincide with the holidays? Will I get my hair done every Friday? Will I drive 15 in a 25? Wait, I already do! Will I still be running? ;) (hope so on that one!) Will I be a good cook? good baker?

One of my favorite things about visiting my Grandma’s is their good food. I definitely hope my grandchildren will reap the benefits of perfected passed down recipes. One of them being the banana bread that’s baking in my oven at this very moment. I call it Jamee’s Banana Bread. (Jamee is one of my best friends from college and introduced me to this morsel of goodness. I am forever grateful!)

Here’s what you need:

  • 3/4 C butter
  • 1.5 C sugar
  • 3-4 ripened bananas
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 C flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • cinnamon and brown sugar
  • 1/2 C buttermilk or milk

Here’s what you do:

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  • Cream butter and sugar together.

  • Add your bananas, eggs & vanilla to the butter mixture. (You may need to stick them in the microwave to defrost them first!)

  • Mix together the flour, salt and baking soda and add to your butter mixture.
  • Add 1/2 C buttermilk or milk to the batter.
  • Top with brown sugar/cinnamon mixture…yum!

  • Bake for 45-50 minutes or until done.

Finished product! (Because I filled the loaf pan so full, it took a lot longer than expected to bake through…hence why it’s a little darker than I wanted it…but still tasty!)

Bargain Hunter

I love a good deal.  I’m the type of shopper who will bring five things to the checkout counter and while in line convince myself I don’t need four of the items and check out with one.  Do you ever do that?

While our husbands were camping, my good friend Carrie and I went in search of high quality foods with a bargain price tag. We had heard rumors of such a place, but were  unsure if it actually existed.  Well blog friends…it does.  Freshfields Farms. 


Produce, Meat, Icecream…what else could you want?  ;)  The store was broken into two parts.  A produce section and a meat section.  To get to the other section you had to checkout first.

Their meat selection was amazing and so fresh.  I picked up some steak, chicken, and pork chops.  Over in the produce section they labeled what was organic and what was not.  Most of the prices were comparable to my local grocery store or less…even better!

Because I knew what a deal I was getting on most, if not all of my purchase, I didn’t skimp on loading up my cart.  I now have a fridge full of fresh food.  I feel so lucky!  Sometimes being a bargain hunter really pays off!

Barre: for the ballerina in all of us.

When I was in elementray school, my Mom signed me up for dance class.  It was socializing at its best.  You get 10-15 giggly girls in a room in pink tights and ballet shoes and there’s bound to be craziness.

Yesterday, I went back to my ballerina roots and took my first barre class.  If you’ve never heard of the barre technique, join the club!  Before attending the class, I thought I would be stretching the whole hour and showing off how inflexible I am.  No, no, no sister…this was a workout.  My legs were burning, my arms were exhausted, and I was asking, “How long is this class?”

barre54 is a new studio opening soon in Central Florida and the teachers needed some extra hours of practice so not only did I get to try out barre for the first time, it was also free!  However, even if it wasn’t free, you better believe I’d want to go back!  You totally work muscles out you don’t even know you had.  The incorporation of three pound weights, the ballet barre, and the use of your own body weight was amazing.  You really get out of this class what you put in; but, even if you’re not putting in much you’ll still feel the burn.

Though I’m a runner by trade, perhaps I’m a ballerina at heart.  I’ll just have to remember to leave the pink tights at home next time.  :)

Farewell to a dear friend.

Dear Megan,

Do you know how much we’ll miss you when you move back home?!  You don’t know how much J and I have loved getting to know you and how much your friendship has meant to us.  Thank you for inviting us into your life and loving us so well!  This post is for you, dear friend.  Promise to keep in touch.

Tonight, we sad farewell to Megan and celebrated her new adventure with our traditional dollar burger night.

A few burgers and sweet potatoes later we were downloading a new app “heytell” to keep in better touch.

And now I’m writing this post thinking about how sad I am to see you leave.

You’re the best, Megan!  You will be missed.

The Friday Five: Hot Dates!

It’s date night tonight and I can’t wait!  You know it’s a hot date when your husband and you plan it a week in advance! :)  In honor of a Friday night out, I thought I’d make this Friday Five:  Hot Dates.

Disclaimer: We are simple people with a budget; so, the following are for all of you who want to save a little $ and have a lot of fun doing it! :)

1. A hot date is biking to Jeremiah’s Ice!  Living in Florida makes this a hot date, literally!

2. A hot date is going to Barnes and Noble, getting a coffee and holding hands through the aisles of new books that are waiting to be read.


3. A hot date is eating in while wearing our pj’s and renting a Red Box!

4. A hot date is heading to Target and getting to pick out one treat each…even if that treat is a new coffee pot!
